Digital Journalism

Jon Snow, presenter, Channel 4 News and Media Trust trustee

Digital Journalism

  • Radio and TV are still the way that most people access the news
  • Journalists are led to water by Twitter. Tweet journalists and blog about case studies for potential news stories.
  • Journalists are essentially lazy. They will go to organisations they already know. Make sure they are alerted to the work that you do. Tell them it's just as easy to come you as it is to a major NGO.
  • Journalists want to hear from charity and voluntary organisations that they have case studies, stories and unique voices.
  • Think before you tweet.
  • "Avoid telling us about the mundanity of your day. Pithy tweets are good, as are jokes."

Three Things a Trustee Should Know:

  1. Raise the profile of the project
  2. People won't donate if they don't know what you do
  3. Have a drink with the staff! - really get to know who they are and what they are doing
