What does it cost?
Getting help through pro bono or discounted rates is easier than you’d think. However, it’s important to understand how suppliers charge and how much they charge.
Most suppliers will charge based on an hourly or daily rate that can usually be negotiated into a fixed project fee or a retainer (a regular monthly payment for services rendered).
When it comes to pro bono and charity work they might waive their fees but ask for their expenses to be covered – in which case, check what these expenses are. Utilities? Travel? Meals? Many bigger agencies mark up expenses to cover the cost of administering them. Does yours?
In terms of cost
If you’re using an independent consultant a good rule of thumb is the 1% rule. On average, most consultants have around 100 fee-earning days a year, so their daily rate should roughly equal 1% of a typical salaried role.
If you’re using a company or agency the resources at your disposal will be greater, but so will the cost. Agencies generally need their employees to earn three or four times their salaries each year to turn a profit.
